MTV Sports Skateboarding is one of those early Game Boy Color games that tried to bring the Tony Hawk vibe to handheld before handheld could really handle it. You pick Andy MacDonald (or one of the other skaters) and hit ramps, rails, and halfpipes across a handful of levels. The controls are a little stiff—expect some awkward bails when you mistime a trick—but there’s a weird charm to the chunky pixelated grinds and ollies.
It’s not the deepest skate sim, but for a quick session between classes or bus rides, it does the job. The soundtrack’s basically nonexistent, so you’ll be humming your own punk riffs to fill the silence. If you’re nostalgic for late ‘90s handheld sports games, this one’s a time capsule.
