I picked up Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events for the Game Boy Advance back in 2004, a time when licensed games were a staple on the handheld. You control the three Baudelaire orphans, switching between Violet, Klaus, and Sunny to use their unique abilities. Violet invents gadgets, Klaus reads and deciphers clues, and Sunny uses her sharp teeth to bite through obstacles. The main goal is to survive the clutches of Count Olaf by navigating through his treacherous house and the surrounding areas, solving environmental puzzles, and avoiding his various traps. The gameplay is methodical, focused on screen by screen exploration and item collection to progress. It's not a fast paced game; you spend a lot of time backtracking and figuring out which child's skill is needed for a specific lock or barrier. The difficulty comes from the trial and error of the puzzles rather than any intense action. Playing it feels like stepping into a somber, interactive storybook where your wits are your only real weapon.
