I remember playing Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events on my Game Boy Advance back in 2004. It was published by Activision, and it felt like a lot of other licensed games from that era; you knew what you were getting, a side scrolling adventure that tried to follow the story of the first movie. The graphics were decent for the GBA, with detailed backgrounds that captured the gloomy, gothic look of the Baudelaire world.

You control all three Baudelaire children, switching between Violet, Klaus, and Sunny to use their unique abilities. Violet builds gadgets, Klaus pushes heavy objects and reads clues, and Sunny crawls into small spaces. The main goal is to survive Count Olaf's schemes and find a way to safety. You explore the environments screen by screen, solving environmental puzzles and avoiding hazards. You collect items to combine into tools, and you have to run and jump past various enemies and traps. The pacing is methodical, as you often stop to figure out a puzzle, and the difficulty can be unforgiving if you miss a jump. Playing it feels like a constant, careful struggle against a world designed to be unfair.
