I picked up Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events for the Game Boy Advance back in 2004, a time when licensed games were a staple on the handheld. Activision published it, and it was one of many movie tie-ins from that era, aiming to capture the gloomy charm of the Baudelaire orphans' story on a small screen. It felt very much of its time, a side-scrolling adventure that tried to do something a bit different with the formula.

You control all three Baudelaire children, switching between Violet, Klaus, and Sunny to use their unique abilities. Violet builds contraptions, Klaus pushes heavy objects and reads clues, and Sunny bites through ropes and small obstacles. The main goal is to navigate through the game's levels, which are based on locations from the film, to ultimately escape the clutches of Count Olaf. You explore screen by screen, solving environmental puzzles that require specific siblings, and there is some simple combat where you throw items to fend off enemies. The pacing is deliberate, focused more on puzzle-solving than action, and some sections can feel a bit slow or repetitive. Playing it feels like a quiet, methodical puzzle box, where success comes from carefully using each child's limited but distinct skills.
