Laser Ghost is one of those weird little Sega Master System gems that somehow makes blasting ghosts with a laser gun feel both frantic and oddly satisfying. You start in this dimly lit haunted house—the kind with floating specters that phase through walls and those annoying bat creatures that dive at you from off-screen. Your laser’s got a slight delay, so you’ve gotta lead your shots, which takes some getting used to but feels great when you nail a ghost mid-drift.

The first few levels trick you into thinking it’s easy, then suddenly you’re swarmed by like eight different types of ghouls at once. There’s something charmingly janky about the way the ghosts move—some glide smoothly, others jerk around like they’re glitching, and it keeps you on your toes. Also, the sound effects? Pure 8-bit spookiness, all warbly moans and that crunchy laser zap.

It’s not the deepest shooter out there, but for a quick blast of retro chaos, it holds up way better than it has any right to. Just don’t expect to beat it on your first try—those later levels get brutal.
