About Koinu To Issho : Aijou Monogatari
I picked up Koinu To Issho: Aijou Monogatari for the Game Boy Advance back when it came out. It was a 2002 release from MTO, a developer known for their pet simulation titles on the system. This game fit right into that niche era of the GBA, offering a quieter, more domestic kind of experience compared to the platformers and RPGs that usually filled my cartridge slot.
You control a young girl tasked with raising a puppy from infancy to adulthood. The main objective is to care for your dog through daily routines; you feed it, give it baths, and train it to follow commands like "sit" and "stay." Two key mechanics involve taking the dog for walks through a small, screen-by-screen neighborhood where you can meet other characters, and playing simple minigames like fetch or frisbee to improve its skills and happiness. The pacing is slow and deliberate, focused more on the gradual bond you build than on any urgent challenge. It feels like a calm, repetitive responsibility, a small digital pet project that becomes surprisingly absorbing over time.
