I picked up Knock-Out Kings for the Game Boy Color back in 1999, a time when portable sports games were starting to get more ambitious. Electronic Arts published it, and it was one of the few attempts to bring a full-featured boxing game to the small screen. It stood out simply by existing, offering a complex sport on hardware that usually got simpler arcade-style titles.

You control a boxer, moving him around the ring to land punches and avoid your opponent's attacks. The main goal is to win fights, either by knockout or decision, to climb the ranks and earn titles. The game uses a combination of button presses for different punches; you throw jabs, hooks, and uppercuts, and you can also block and dodge. Managing your stamina is crucial, as swinging wildly leaves you exhausted and vulnerable. The pacing is deliberate, forcing you to pick your moments rather than brawl mindlessly. It feels like a genuine test of patience and timing, where a single well-placed punch can change everything.
