About Kirikou
I first played Kirikou on the Game Boy Color back in 2001. It was published by Cryo Interactive, a name I sometimes saw on European-developed titles. This was late in the handheld's life, a time when developers were still finding interesting ways to use the limited color palette and hardware. The game is based on the West African folk tale, which was a refreshing change from the usual fantasy settings.
You control Kirikou, a small but determined boy, navigating a large world screen by screen. Your main goal is to rescue the children of your village who have been captured. You explore forests, caves, and villages, fighting enemies with your tiny spear. The combat is straightforward; you just walk into foes, but you have to get the spacing and timing right. A key part of the game is finding and using special items, like a magic gourd that lets you breathe underwater to access new areas. The pacing is deliberate, and some puzzles require careful observation of your surroundings. It feels like a quiet, thoughtful adventure where your small size makes every victory meaningful.
