About Kirikou (europe) (en,fr,de,es,it,pt)
I first played Kirikou on the Game Boy Color back in 2001. It was published by Wanadoo Edition, and it felt like a natural part of that late era for the handheld, a time when developers were still finding interesting ways to use the hardware. The game is based on the West African folk tale, which was a refreshing change from the usual fantasy settings.
You control Kirikou, a small but clever boy, navigating a large, interconnected world screen by screen. Your main goal is to rescue the children of your village who have been captured. You run, jump across platforms, and use a spear to defeat the animals and magical creatures blocking your path. A key mechanic involves finding and using special items, like a slingshot or magical seeds, to solve environmental puzzles and access new areas. The pacing is deliberate, with some challenging enemy patterns and platforming sections that require precise timing. Moving through the vibrant, sometimes dangerous world makes you feel both vulnerable and resourceful.
