About Kingmaker
Kingmaker is a turn based strategy video game released in 1994 for MS DOS systems. It was developed by TM Games and published by The Avalon Hill Game Company, based on the earlier board game of the same name. The game is set during the Wars of the Roses in medieval England and presents a historical battle scenario from a top down perspective.
Players assume the role of a faction leader, choosing to command either the House of York or the House of Lancaster. The primary objective is to maneuver a chosen royal heir to secure the throne of England. Gameplay progresses through a series of turns where players manage political influence across a map of the kingdom. Key systems involve granting noble titles to secure the loyalty of various characters and using political maneuvers to undermine opposing factions. The combat interface is streamlined, placing greater emphasis on strategic planning and diplomatic actions rather than direct military engagements.
Progression involves moving military units and key figures across the landscape to control territories and gather support. Players must manage resources and allegiances, often employing indirect strategies to weaken rivals. The game structure focuses on achieving strategic dominance through careful political calculation and the opportunistic elimination of opposition, simulating the dynastic conflicts of the period.
