Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories came out for the Game Boy Advance in 2004, developed by Square Enix and Jupiter. It was a strange release at the time, a direct sequel to the big PlayStation 2 game that tried to fit that console's scope onto a tiny cartridge. You follow Sora, Donald, and Goofy as they explore a mysterious castle that causes them to lose their memories, effectively retreading the worlds from the first game but with a new, darker context.

You control Sora directly, moving room to room in a side-scrolling view to battle Heartless and recover your past. Your main goal is to ascend the castle's floors, each built from cards you collect and arrange to form the map layout. The combat is entirely card-based; every attack, spell, and item is a card you play in real time, and you build decks to string together combos. You also use special "sleight" commands that consume multiple cards for a powerful single strike. The game can feel punishing, as enemies get tougher quickly and managing your deck in the middle of a fight is essential. It creates a unique rhythm of frantic action mixed with strategic planning.
