Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories came out for the Game Boy Advance in 2004, developed and published by Square Enix. It was one of those substantial GBA titles that tried to bring a console-style RPG experience to a handheld, arriving at a time when developers were really pushing what the little system could do.

You control Sora, exploring a mysterious castle room by room. Your main goal is to ascend the castle's floors, each constructed from your own memories of past worlds. The combat is action-oriented but revolves entirely around a deck of cards. Every attack, spell, and item is a card you play in real time, and you can even string them together into combos called sleights. You also use these cards to open doors to new rooms, which requires you to match a specific card number, adding a puzzle layer to the exploration. The game can be surprisingly difficult, demanding careful deck management rather than just button mashing. It feels like a strange but thoughtful hybrid of frantic action and deliberate strategy.
