Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories came out for the Game Boy Advance in 2004, developed by Square Enix and Jupiter. It was a time when developers were pushing what the handheld could do, creating surprisingly deep experiences on that small screen. This game picks up right after the first one, following Sora and his friends into a mysterious castle.

You control Sora, moving room to room through the castle, which is built from cards you collect. Your main goal is to climb the castle's floors, but your memories are being altered along the way. The combat is action-based but revolves entirely around a deck of cards; every attack, spell, and item is a card you play in real time. You build your deck before battles, and you can even break an enemy's card with a higher-numbered one. The pacing is methodical, as you constantly manage your deck and plan your route through each floor. It can be quite difficult, demanding that you think on your feet during fights. Playing it feels like a constant, engaging puzzle wrapped in an action game.
