King's Bounty is a strategy game released in 1990 for MS-DOS. It was developed and published by New World Computing, Inc. The game presents a top-down perspective of a fantasy world where the player undertakes a quest on behalf of a king.

The player commands a hero who recruits and leads an army of fantasy creatures. The primary objective is to explore four sequential maps to locate the King's Sceptre and return it to the monarch. Gameplay involves moving the hero across a world map, engaging in tactical combat with enemy armies, and capturing castles held by rival lords. Progression is tied to conquering these enemy-occupied castles, which grants the hero experience levels. After a set number of promotions, the hero gains the ability to recruit more powerful unit types, such as cavalry and knights, from captured structures. Managing finances is a constant concern, as armies require regular payment; insufficient funds can lead to units deserting or rebelling.

The game world is fully visible, allowing players to methodically eliminate all hostile forces on a map, though random encounters can spawn in undefended castles. Each map contains two artifacts that reveal the location of a piece of the map leading to the Sceptre. Finding and retrieving this item immediately ends the game, regardless of how much of the world remains unexplored. Opposing armies grow in strength over time, and particularly powerful late-game enemies field forces too large to defeat in a single engagement. If the player's army is destroyed, the hero respawns at the king's castle with minimal forces, but any enemy units lost in the previous battle remain defeated, creating opportunities for a renewed assault.
