Kiki Kaikai Advance came out for the Game Boy Advance in 2003, published by Taito. You control a young shrine maiden named Sayo-chan, navigating through screen-by-screen areas filled with yokai and other monsters. Your main goal is to purify these cursed lands by defeating the bosses that control them. You attack with a rapid-fire ofuda, which are spiritual paper charms, and you have a close-range swipe with your gohei to deflect enemy projectiles. The game is structured around exploring these interconnected stages, finding keys to unlock new paths, and collecting power-ups to strengthen your shots. It moves at a brisk pace, and the difficulty can spike unexpectedly with dense enemy patterns. Playing it feels like a constant, focused dance between shooting from a distance and timing your melee deflections just right.
