About Ken Griffey Jr.'s Slugfest
Ken Griffey Jr.'s Slugfest came out for the Game Boy Color in 1999, published by Nintendo. It was part of a wave of sports titles that tried to capture the feel of a full console game on a handheld. You could tell they were pushing the hardware, trying to fit a complete baseball experience onto that small, colorful screen.
You control a full baseball team, aiming to win games through a mix of pitching, batting, and fielding. The main objective is simply to outscore your opponent. A couple of its signature mechanics include the home run derby mode, which is a pure test of your timing at the plate, and the ability to steal bases with a well-timed button press. The game moves at a brisk pace; fielding can sometimes feel frantic as you try to get a player to the ball quickly. It feels satisfying to connect with a pitch and watch it sail over the outfield wall.
