International Superstar Soccer 1 Game

International Superstar Soccer 1 on Game Boy Color is one of those old-school soccer games that somehow still feels good to play. The controls are simple—just pass, shoot, and sprint—but matches get surprisingly tense, especially when you’re down a goal in the last few minutes. The pixelated players move a little stiffly by today’s standards, but there’s something satisfying about nailing a long-range shot or pulling off a last-second tackle.
It’s not as deep as later ISS games, but that’s part of the charm. You pick a team, adjust the match length (go for 10 minutes if you want a proper back-and-forth), and just play. The commentary is hilariously basic—mostly just “GOAL!” and “SHOOT!”—but it adds to the retro vibe. If you’ve got a soft spot for 90s handheld sports games, this one’s still a solid time.
