Hiryuu No Ken - Retsuden GB is one of those classic Game Boy Color fighters that flew under the radar outside Japan. It’s got that chunky pixel art style and simple controls—just two attack buttons and directional inputs, but the timing feels surprisingly tight once you get into it.
You pick from a small but varied roster (my go-to was the ninja, obviously) and duke it out in these little arena-style stages. The sprites are big for a GBC game, and the animations have this satisfying weight to them—landing a heavy punch actually feels like it connects. There’s even a weirdly fun story mode if you can muddle through the Japanese text.
It’s not as deep as later fighters, but for a portable brawler from 1999, it holds up better than you’d expect.
