About Hikaru No Go
Konami released Hikaru No Go for the Game Boy Advance in 2001, a time when handhelds were full of licensed anime games. This one stood out because it was about Go, a board game I knew nothing about. It followed the story of the manga and anime, putting you in the shoes of a boy named Hikaru who gets possessed by the ghost of a master Go player from the Heian era.
You control Hikaru as he navigates his school life and the competitive Go circuit. The main objective is to improve your rank by winning matches against a series of increasingly skilled opponents. The core gameplay involves placing stones on a grid board to capture territory and enemy pieces, with the ghost Sai offering guidance and sometimes taking over for you during difficult matches. Between matches, you explore different locations screen by screen, talking to characters to advance the story and find new challengers. The pacing is deliberate, focused on learning and strategy rather than action, and the difficulty curve is steep if you are new to Go's rules. It feels like slowly unlocking a deep and complex puzzle with every game you play.
