I picked up Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi: Kaznapped for the Game Boy Advance back when it was new, a 2005 release from Atlus. It was one of many licensed games from that era, a time when you could find cartoon characters in almost every genre. This one was based on the show about the Japanese pop duo, and it fit right in with the portable platformers of the time.

You control both Ami and Yumi, switching between them on the fly. Ami uses her keyboard to shoot musical notes at enemies, while Yumi swings her guitar like a club for close combat. The main goal is to rescue your manager Kaz, which sends you through themed levels across different cities. You jump between platforms, defeat waves of robotic Kaz-bots, and hunt for hidden CDs to unlock new stages. The game moves at a brisk pace, and some of the later platforming sections require precise timing. It feels like a straightforward, energetic run-and-gun with a cheerful soundtrack pushing you forward.
