HeroQuest is a turn based fantasy adventure game released for MS DOS in 1991. It was developed by 221B Software Development and published by Gremlin Graphics Software Limited. The game is an adaptation of a board game and presents its action from an isometric perspective, supporting play for up to four participants.

Players select from a party of four characters: a dwarf, a barbarian, an elf, and a wizard. Each character possesses distinct attributes, with the elf and wizard being the only classes capable of casting spells. Gameplay is structured across fourteen distinct missions, which function as self contained dungeons. At the start of each mission, characters roll dice to determine the order of movement for that round. On a turn, a player rolls dice to generate action points, which are then spent to move through the dungeon, engage in combat, or cast spells. Progression involves locating the dungeon exit, but missions often have specific secondary objectives such as assassinating a particular monster, rescuing a non player character, or finding a certain item.

Combat is resolved using a dice based system where the attacker and defender roll specialized dice featuring skull and shield symbols. The number of skulls rolled by the attacker is compared to the number of shields rolled by the defender; excess skulls result in damage to the defender. Exploration is a key activity, as players can choose to search rooms for potions, treasure, or secret doors, though this action carries an equal chance of triggering traps or spawning enemies. If a character survives a mission, any gold earned can be used between quests to purchase permanent equipment like weapons, armor, or trap disposal kits, which improve chances in future adventures. Should a character fall during a mission, they must be renewed, a process that strips them of all acquired gear. Missions are listed in a general order of difficulty but do not need to be completed in a strict sequence, and a character that survives can be reused in subsequent quests.
