Great Battle Pocket is one of those classic GBC games that flew under the radar outside Japan. It's a side-scrolling action RPG where you pick from a roster of mech pilots—each with their own playstyle—and smash through waves of enemies. The sprites are surprisingly detailed for a Game Boy Color title, and the combat feels weighty in that satisfying 90s arcade way.
At first I thought it was just another generic robot brawler, but the branching upgrade paths and occasional puzzle sections keep it interesting. The music’s got that crunchy GBC synth sound too, which I’m weirdly into. Definitely a hidden gem if you’re into retro mecha games.
