Great Baseball is one of those hidden gems that never made it out of Japan—which is a shame, because it’s actually a solid little baseball sim for the Master System. The graphics are simple but clean, with these tiny, chunky players that somehow still feel expressive when they swing or dive for a catch. The pitching mechanics are surprisingly deep for an 8-bit game, letting you mix up fastballs and curves with decent precision.

At first, I thought it was just another barebones sports title, but there’s a weird charm to it—like how the crowd noise cuts in and out in this almost rhythmic way, or how the umpire dramatically waves his arms on a strikeout. It’s definitely not as flashy as later baseball games, but if you’re into retro sports titles, this one’s worth a few innings.
