Golden Sun: Sealed Ancient Alchemy came out for the Game Boy Color in 2003, developed by Camelot Software Planning. It was part of that late era for the handheld, a time when developers were really pushing what the hardware could do before the Advance took over. You could see the ambition in the detailed sprite work and the depth of the world.

You control a small party of young Adepts, characters who can manipulate elemental forces called Psynergy, on a quest to prevent the destructive power of alchemy from being unleashed upon the world. Your main goal involves traveling across the land of Weyard, exploring towns, dungeons, and the overworld screen by screen. Two of the most engaging mechanics are using your various Psynergy powers to solve environmental puzzles outside of battle, like moving pillars or growing vines, and the Djinn system, where you collect these elemental creatures to customize your characters' classes and summon powerful beings in combat. The pacing is deliberate, with a good amount of backtracking and thinking required to progress, and the difficulty comes from strategic boss fights rather than relentless random encounters. It feels like piecing together a large, interactive puzzle where every new ability opens up a previously inaccessible part of the map.
