I first played Golden Sun on the Game Boy Advance back in 2001. It was developed by Camelot, the same team behind the Shining Force series, and it arrived when the GBA was establishing itself as a serious platform for deep, portable adventures. The game felt like a natural evolution of the 16-bit RPGs I grew up with, but it was built for a handheld, which made its scope all the more impressive.

You control a party of young Adepts, characters who can manipulate elemental forces called Psynergy. Your main goal is to prevent the ancient power of Alchemy from being unleashed upon the world, a quest that takes you across continents. Exploration is screen by screen, with Psynergy used outside of battle to solve environmental puzzles, like moving pillars or growing vines to reach new areas. In dungeons, you navigate multi-level layouts, push blocks, and avoid traps. The turn-based combat is strategic, letting you summon powerful elemental creatures. The pacing is deliberate, with some challenging boss fights that require careful planning. Playing it feels like slowly uncovering a vast, interconnected world where every new town or dungeon holds a tangible sense of discovery.
