About Glocal Hexcite (japan)
Glocal Hexcite was released for the Game Boy Color in Japan, though it never saw a wider international release. It was developed by Jupiter, a company known for other handheld titles. This game arrived during a period when the Game Boy Color library was expanding with many puzzle and action hybrids, offering a distinct take on the block matching genre.
You control a cursor to swap adjacent hexagonal tiles on a grid, aiming to match three or more of the same color to clear them from the board. The main objective is to prevent the stack of blocks from reaching the top of the screen by creating chains and combos. Two signature mechanics include a special gauge that builds as you make matches, allowing you to trigger a screen clearing bomb, and the constant, gentle upward push of the entire block stack which adds a persistent time pressure. The pace is methodical but insistent, requiring you to plan swaps several steps ahead under a quiet duress. It feels like a calm but focused race against a slowly rising tide.
