Gensoumaden Saiyuuki - Sabaku No Shikami (japan) Game

This one’s a hidden gem if you’re into old-school action RPGs with a twist—it’s based on the Saiyuki anime, so you’re basically playing as the crew from Journey to the West but with way more attitude. The combat’s simple but satisfying, mixing sword slashes with magic, and the pixel art actually holds up pretty well for a GBC game.
First few minutes? You’re thrown right into a desert battle, dodging sand demons while figuring out which attacks chain together best. (Pro tip: Don’t sleep on Son Goku’s pole combos.) It’s got that classic grind-y feel, but the boss fights make it worth it—some of them are brutal in the best way.
Definitely one for fans of the series or anyone who misses when handheld RPGs didn’t overcomplicate things. Just don’t expect a full English patch—this one’s Japanese-only, but the menus aren’t too hard to muscle through.
