Gensoumaden Saiyuuki - Sabaku no Shikami was a Japan only release for the Game Boy Color, arriving late in the system's life. It was developed by Japan System Supply, a studio that worked on several other Game Boy titles. This was a time when developers were pushing the hardware's limits with more complex action games.
You control the monk Genjo Sanzo, moving him through side scrolling stages and top down areas. Your main goal is to fight through waves of demons to reach the end of each level. The combat is straightforward; you use your pistol to shoot enemies and a melee attack for close encounters. You also collect scrolls to power up your shots and find keys to unlock new paths.
