About Gem Gem Monster (japan)
Gem Gem Monster was a Japan only release for the Game Boy Color, arriving late in the system's life. I don't recall the developer offhand, but it was one of those puzzle games that felt perfectly suited for the handheld's small screen and pick up and play nature.
You control a small character, moving screen by screen through a series of single room puzzles. Your main goal is to collect all the gems in a stage to open the exit. The signature mechanics involve pushing blocks to clear paths and trigger switches, while avoiding or trapping the monsters that roam each area. The game starts simply but the puzzles become quite devious, demanding careful planning for each push. It feels satisfying to finally solve a stage that had you stuck for a while.
