About Gauntlet & Rampart (u)(trashman)
I picked up Gauntlet & Rampart for the Game Boy Advance, a cartridge that seems to have been a zero release, meaning it wasn't officially published in stores. It's a compilation that brings together two very different games from the arcade and home console era, adapted for the handheld. Playing it feels like digging through a time capsule from the early 2000s, when developers were experimenting with bringing classic multiplayer experiences to a single screen.
In the Gauntlet portion, you choose a fantasy character like a warrior or wizard and venture through maze-like dungeons. Your main goal is to survive each floor, fighting endless waves of ghosts, grubs, and demons. You constantly manage your health, which ticks down over time, and collect keys to open doors and food to stay alive. The Rampart half is a complete shift; you control a castle, placing walls in a Tetris-like puzzle to form a complete fortress before cannons and ships attack. After building your defenses, you man the cannons yourself to destroy the invading fleet. Both games are fast and demand quick decisions, with Gauntlet's constant resource drain creating a persistent urgency. Moving between the frantic action of dungeon crawling and the strategic puzzle of castle defense makes for a surprisingly varied session on the small screen.
