Ganbare Goemon - Tengutou no Gyakushuu is one of those weird, charming Game Boy Color gems that never made it outside Japan. You play as Goemon, the blue-haired, pipe-wielding hero, bouncing around feudal Japan with his buddy Ebisumaru. The sprites are tiny but full of personality—Goemon even does this little victory dance whenever you clear a stage.
It’s a side-scrolling action-platformer with some light RPG elements. You’ll slash enemies with your pipe, collect coins to upgrade your health, and occasionally hop into a giant robot (because of course you do). The levels get surprisingly tricky—some of those platforming sections had me retrying way more than I’d like to admit. And yeah, it’s all in Japanese, but the gameplay’s straightforward enough that you can muddle through.
If you’re into retro games with quirky humor and tight controls, this one’s a blast. Just don’t expect a deep story—half the fun is the absurdity of a ninja tossing coins at sumo wrestlers.
