Galactic Protector is one of those weird little SMS shooters that never made it out of Japan—which is a shame, because it’s got that same colorful, slightly offbeat Fantasy Zone vibe. You’re piloting a ship through these bright, chunky alien landscapes, blasting waves of enemies that look like they escaped from a toy box. The controls are simple, but some of the later stages get surprisingly brutal if you’re not careful with power-ups.

It’s not as polished as Fantasy Zone proper, but there’s something charming about how aggressively 80s it feels—like if someone took an arcade cabinet, shrunk it down, and stuffed it into a Sega cartridge. Definitely worth a look if you’re into obscure retro shooters.
