Gain Ground is one of those weird arcade ports that somehow works better on the Master System than it has any right to. You get this odd mix of strategy and action—pick three characters from a roster of warriors, archers, and other oddballs, then try to escort them across these maze-like battlefields. The archer’s my favorite, but good luck keeping her alive when some axe-wielding maniac charges at you.

It’s got that classic Sega feel—bright colors, chunky sprites, and just enough jank to remind you it’s from 1988. The Genesis version might be flashier, but there’s something charming about the stripped-down Master System take. Just don’t expect it to go easy on you.
