About Gain Ground (europe)
Gain Ground came to the Sega Master System after its arcade debut, a conversion handled by Sega. On the 8-bit console, it was one of the more ambitious titles, asking you to clear over forty distinct stages by rescuing soldiers and reaching the exit.
You command a squad of characters, each with a unique weapon and movement speed, from a knight with a short-range sword to an archer who can fire over obstacles. The main goal is to get your units to the exit door alive, but you can also recruit the warriors you find stranded on the battlefield. The game progresses screen by screen, and you must often choose between a direct assault or a more cautious, tactical approach. Its difficulty is steady, demanding you learn enemy patterns and use the right character for each situation. It feels like solving a violent, moving puzzle with a clock ticking down.
