About Freekstyle
Freekstyle came out for the Game Boy Advance in 2002, developed by Full Fat. It was part of that wave of extreme sports games that tried to capture the feeling of big console titles on a handheld. You got a lot of racing games on the GBA, but this one was about motocross with a trick system, which felt a bit different from the standard circuit racers at the time.
You control a motocross rider on a series of dirt tracks. The main goal is straightforward: finish first. To get there, you spend most of your time pulling off tricks in the air to fill a boost meter. Landing tricks successfully gives you a temporary speed burst, which is crucial for pulling ahead or catching up after a crash. The tracks are filled with jumps and tight turns, demanding quick reflexes to maintain control. It can be unforgiving; a bad landing sends you tumbling and costs precious seconds. The sensation of linking a big trick into a boost and then threading through a pack of riders is a consistent, gratifying loop.
