About Fort Boyard
I picked up Fort Boyard on the Game Boy Color back in 1999, a time when licensed games based on TV shows were a common sight. This one was published by Microids, and it tried to capture the feel of the French adventure game show where contestants tackle physical and mental challenges in an old fortress. It was a straightforward attempt to bring that cooperative, puzzle-solving tension to a handheld screen, fitting right in with the era's experimental titles.
You control a team of characters, switching between them to navigate the fortress room by room. The main goal is to collect a set of keys and reach the treasure chamber before time runs out. The gameplay revolves around solving environmental puzzles, like moving blocks or finding hidden switches, and engaging in simple combat with the occasional guard using a sword. The pacing is deliberate, as you methodically explore each screen and manage your limited inventory, and the difficulty comes from the constant time pressure and some tricky logic puzzles. It feels like a careful, sometimes tense, race against the clock where every decision matters.
