Fantasy General is a turn-based strategy game released in 1996 for MS-DOS. In the campaign, the player selects one of four heroes, each with unique abilities, to lead a resistance against a dominant evil force known as the Shadowlord. The primary objective is to liberate the game world across five continents, culminating in a final confrontation on Fire Isle. Progression is structured through a series of individual battles, with brief strategic management between engagements for recruiting units, setting research priorities, and handling finances. The core gameplay revolves around assembling and commanding an army composed of ten unit types drawn from four different realms, each with numerous upgrade paths.

Battles take place on varied hex grids where terrain types such as plains and swamps significantly affect unit performance, requiring tactical adaptation. Players must construct a balanced army capable of responding to different challenges presented by the enemy, which has access to a similarly wide array of units. Beyond the story campaign, the game also includes an arena mode where players can fight single battles against either computer or human opponents.
