Fantastic ShaoLin Kungfu on Game Boy Color is one of those old-school brawlers that feels like it was designed to destroy your thumbs—in the best way possible. You start off with basic punches and kicks, but after a few levels, you’re pulling off spinning jump attacks and dodging projectiles like some kind of pixelated Bruce Lee. The enemies actually put up a fight, too—no mindless button mashing here.

What I love is how it nails that classic arcade feel despite being on a handheld. The backgrounds are simple but full of little details, like lanterns swaying or monks training in the distance. And yeah, the controls take a minute to get used to (why is the jump button so stiff?), but once it clicks, you’ll be kicking your way through waves of enemies like it’s second nature.

It’s not the deepest fighter out there, but for a Game Boy Color game? It’s surprisingly satisfying. Just don’t expect to beat it in one sitting—some of those later bosses are brutal.
