Famicom Mini 23: Metroid was part of a series of Game Boy Advance reissues that brought classic Famicom games to a handheld format. This version of Metroid was originally developed by Nintendo R&D1 and Intelligent Systems, and it arrived on the GBA during a period when many players were rediscovering 8-bit titles through these portable collections. It stood out as an early example of the exploration-heavy action games that would later define a whole genre.

You control Samus Aran, a bounty hunter exploring the caverns of planet Zebes. Your main goal is to find and defeat the Mother Brain, but the path is nonlinear and filled with secrets. You start with a weak arm cannon and a simple jump, then gradually collect power-ups like the Morph Ball for squeezing into small tunnels, missiles for breaking certain blocks and damaging stronger enemies, and the Ice Beam to freeze foes solid. The game is paced deliberately; you often backtrack through previously visited areas once you have new abilities, and the difficulty comes from both the hostile creatures and the challenge of remembering the sprawling, identical-looking corridors. Navigating the maze-like world with limited resources creates a tense, isolated feeling as you piece the map together in your mind.
