Fallout is a role-playing game released in 1997 for MS-DOS, developed and published by Interplay Productions. The game is set in a post-nuclear wasteland where the player controls a survivor from an underground shelter known as a Vault. The primary objective is to locate a replacement water chip to ensure the survival of the Vault's inhabitants, with the mission carrying a strict time limit.

The player creates a character by assigning traits and distributing points among attributes and skills. Progression is achieved by earning experience points, leveling up, and allocating skill points across eighteen different abilities, which are grouped into combat, active, and passive categories. Further customization comes from selecting perks at regular intervals. The game world is open for exploration from the beginning, featuring a main storyline supported by numerous optional side quests. A key element is the emphasis on social interaction, allowing many situations to be resolved through dialogue and skill checks without resorting to violence, though a fully combat-oriented approach is also possible. Player choices are tracked through a karma system that reflects moral decisions made throughout the journey.

Combat is conducted in a turn-based format where each participant has a set number of action points to spend on movement, attacks, or other actions each turn. During battles, the player can target specific body parts on enemies for tactical advantage. The protagonist can be accompanied by computer-controlled companions who fight in the party, though their actions are managed by artificial intelligence and cannot be directly customized by the player. This structure allows for varied approaches to navigating the hazardous world and completing objectives.
