I picked up FIFA 2003 for the Game Boy Advance back in 2002, a portable soccer title from EA Sports. It arrived when the GBA library was filling out with various sports games, offering a pocket sized version of the console experience. This wasn't a complex simulation, but it was soccer you could take anywhere.
You control a team of eleven players, passing and shooting to score goals against the opposing side. The main objective is to win matches across different leagues and cup tournaments. A few mechanics stand out: the through pass lets you send a teammate sprinting behind the defense, and the one on one shooting system gives you a bit of control over placement when you break away. The game moves at a brisk pace, and the difficulty can spike noticeably on higher settings, making you work for every scoring chance. It feels satisfying to string a few passes together and finally slot the ball into the net.
