F-1 Racing Championship came out on the Game Boy Color in 2000, published by Ubisoft. It was one of the few attempts to bring a full Formula One experience to the handheld during that era, a time when portable racing games were often simpler top-down affairs. You control a single Formula One car from a third-person perspective, racing against a full grid on circuits modeled after the real 1999 season tracks. The main objective is to progress through a championship, qualifying well and then finishing races in the highest position to earn points. Signature mechanics include a fuel and tire wear system that forces you to manage your pit stops strategically; you can't just drive flat out the whole race. The car handles with a noticeable sense of weight and momentum, making cornering a careful balance of braking and turning. The pacing is methodical, and the difficulty is steep, especially when trying to catch the leading AI cars on the narrow, pixelated tracks. It feels like a constant, tense battle for control against both the car and the clock.
