About Estpolis Denki - Yomigaeru Densetsu (japan)
Estpolis Denki: Yomigaeru Densetsu came out in 1999 for the Game Boy Color, developed by Neverland and published by Taito. It was part of that late-era push for the handheld, offering a deeper, console-style RPG experience you could take with you. The game is actually the third entry in the Lufia series, continuing its particular brand of fantasy storytelling.
You control Wain, a descendant of the hero Maxim, leading a small party to stop the four Sinistrals from destroying the world. The core loop involves exploring towns and the world map, then delving into dungeons that are navigated screen by screen. Combat is turn-based, letting you plan out attacks and spells for your party members against visible enemies on the map. A key mechanic is the IP system, where taking damage fills a gauge that lets you unleash powerful special skills. The pacing is deliberate, with dungeons that often require careful mapping and puzzle-solving, making it a thoughtful challenge. Playing it feels like slowly unraveling a long, personal quest where every new spell and dungeon corridor matters.
