About Ecco The Dolphin (europe)
I first played Ecco the Dolphin on the Sega Master System, a version published by Sega that came out in the early 90s. It was a time when console games were experimenting with more atmospheric and unusual concepts, and this one definitely stood out from the usual platformers and shooters. You don't see many games where you play as a dolphin.
You control Ecco, a bottlenose dolphin, and your main goal is to find your pod after they are mysteriously swept away by a vortex. The gameplay involves swimming through interconnected, screen by screen areas, solving environmental puzzles and navigating labyrinthine underwater caves. You use Ecco's sonar to communicate with other sea life, which often provides clues, and you must constantly manage your air supply by surfacing to breathe. The pacing is slow and deliberate, with a significant challenge coming from the precise jumps needed to traverse certain sections and the hostile creatures you encounter. It feels like a lonely and vast exploration of an alien ocean, even when you're just trying to get from one area to the next without running out of air.
