You control Elliott, guiding him through suburban neighborhoods, forests, and government facilities screen by screen. Your main goal is to help E.T. phone home by finding the parts to build his communication device. This involves a lot of exploration and item collection; you search areas for hidden objects, solve simple environmental puzzles, and avoid scientists and police who will chase you. The game moves at a deliberate pace, and some sections can feel repetitive as you backtrack to locate specific items. The difficulty comes from figuring out where to go next and managing your encounters with the adults. Playing it feels like a slow, methodical scavenger hunt from a bygone era.
