Dynasty Warriors Advance came out in 2005 for the Game Boy Advance, developed by Koei. You control a single warrior from the Romance of the Three Kingdoms era, leading your troops through a series of connected battle maps. Your main goal is to capture enemy bases by defeating their officers and meeting specific mission objectives, like defending your own commander or taking a key stronghold. The combat is built around stringing together basic and charge attacks to mow down dozens of soldiers at a time, which builds up a musou gauge for a powerful super move. Instead of the huge, open battlefields of the console games, you explore the war zone screen by screen, which makes the pacing more deliberate and the enemy encounters more contained. The difficulty can spike unexpectedly if you let enemy officers surround you or fail a mission condition quickly. It feels like a condensed, tactical version of the familiar chaos.
