About Dukes Of Hazzard, The - Racing For Home
I picked up Dukes of Hazzard: Racing for Home when it came out in 1999 for the Game Boy Color. It was published by SouthPeak Interactive, and it fit right in with the other licensed games of that era, the kind you'd play on a road trip with the little system's light attachment clipped on. It was a simple time for portable games, and this one was squarely in that camp.
You control Bo and Luke Duke, switching between them to drive the General Lee through Hazzard County. The main goal is to complete missions for Uncle Jesse, which usually involve outrunning Sheriff Rosco P. Coltrane or Boss Hogg's goons. The gameplay is split between top-down driving across a map and side-scrolling sections where you get out of the car to explore buildings or talk to people. You have to manage your car's damage and find repair kits, and the police chases can get pretty frantic. The difficulty isn't too harsh, but the controls take some getting used to, especially during the on-foot parts. It feels like a straightforward arcade adventure that captures the show's car chase spirit without too much complexity.
