Duke Nukem Advance came out for the Game Boy Advance in 2002, published by Take-Two Interactive under their Gathering of Developers label. It arrived when the GBA library was filling up with ambitious attempts to bring console-style action to a handheld. This was one of those attempts, a side-scrolling shooter that tried to capture the spirit of the bigger PC and console games.

You control Duke Nukem through a series of levels, shooting aliens and searching for keycards to progress. The main objective is to fight through city streets, military bases, and even a space station to stop an alien invasion. Signature mechanics include screen-by-screen exploration where you often backtrack to use newly found items, a weapon selection that lets you switch between a pistol, shotgun, and pipe bombs, and hidden secret areas containing extra ammo and health. The pacing is relentless, and the difficulty can be punishing if you aren't careful with your limited supplies. It feels like a condensed, portable version of Duke's brand of chaos, where every corner could hide another enemy to blast.
