Driver 2 Advance came out for the Game Boy Advance in 2002, developed by Sennari Interactive and published by Atari. It was part of that early wave of GBA titles trying to bring console style driving action into your hands. You play as undercover cop Tanner, driving through four cities like Chicago and Rio to infiltrate a criminal syndicate. Most of your time is spent behind the wheel, completing missions that involve tailing suspects, evading police, or causing specific amounts of damage. The game uses a top down perspective, and a key mechanic is the ability to exit your car on foot to steal new vehicles, which adds a layer of strategy when you need a faster ride or a specific car type. Another signature element is the persistent damage system; your car accumulates dents and smashed windows during chases, affecting both its appearance and handling. The missions can be quite difficult, with strict time limits and aggressive AI that punishes mistakes. Navigating the small, blocky city maps while managing your vehicle's condition creates a tense, sometimes frustrating, but consistently engaging challenge. It feels like a rough but earnest attempt to capture the freedom of its bigger console cousins.
