About Driv3r (u)(trashman)
Driv3r on the Game Boy Advance came out in 2005, a portable version of the bigger console game. It was developed by Gameloft and published by Atari, arriving late in the GBA's life when developers were pushing the hardware with ambitious 3D-style games. This was an attempt to bring a complex driving and shooting experience to a handheld.
You control undercover cop Tanner, working to infiltrate a car theft ring. The main goal is to complete missions across different cities, which involves a mix of driving and on-foot action. Signature mechanics include stealing specific vehicles to progress and engaging in third-person shootouts with enemy gangs. The driving feels loose, and the on-foot controls can be clumsy, making some sections frustrating. Navigating the open city between objectives is a core part of the loop, though the small screen and draw distance make it challenging. Playing it feels like a constant struggle against the limits of the hardware to deliver its intended scope.
