I first played Dragon's Lair on the Game Boy Color back in 1999, a version handled by Digital Eclipse. It was a strange and ambitious project for the handheld, trying to capture the feel of the original arcade game on much more limited hardware. During that era, seeing a cartoon-like adventure on a small screen was a novelty, even if it meant some compromises.

You control Dirk the Daring, a knight navigating a treacherous castle. Your main goal is to rescue Princess Daphne from a dragon named Singe. The game plays out screen by screen; you explore different rooms and corridors, each presenting a specific hazard or enemy. Your primary actions involve using your sword to fight off creatures or interacting with the environment at the right moment, often requiring precise timing. The pacing is deliberate, and the difficulty comes from memorizing the correct sequence of moves for each screen, as a mistimed action usually leads to a quick, animated death. Playing it feels like working through a series of dangerous, interconnected puzzles where every step must be calculated.
