Dragon Warrior Monsters 2: Tara's Adventure came out for the Game Boy Color in 2001, published by Enix. It was part of that wave of late life cycle Game Boy Color RPGs that felt dense and surprisingly deep for a handheld. This one was the follow up to the first Dragon Warrior Monsters, and it landed right before the Game Boy Advance changed everything, so it felt like a culmination of what the hardware could do.

You play as a young boy or girl who gets pulled into a monster world. Your main job is to explore a series of large, screen by screen maps and dungeons to find keys that unlock new areas. The core of the game is monster recruitment; you fight wild monsters and sometimes, if you're lucky, they ask to join your team. You then raise them, breed them to create stronger offspring with new abilities, and build a party of three for turn based battles. The pacing is deliberate, with a lot of time spent grinding in the wild to level up your monsters or find a specific breed. It feels like a constant, personal project of building your own perfect monster team from the ground up.
